Mayoral hopefuls didn't seek endorsement

None of the four candidates seeking to be New Westminster's next mayor applied for an endorsement from the New Westminster and District Labour Council.

None of the four candidates seeking to be New Westminster's next mayor applied for an endorsement from the New Westminster and District Labour Council.

Caroline Rice, secretary-treasurer of the labour council, said the labour council doesn't actively recruit candidates.

"We sent our packages out in the spring to the incumbents," she said.

"We certainly encourage them to pass information along about the endorsement process."

The labour council hasn't supported a mayoral candidate in New Westminster in some time.

"That's not true," Rice said about rumours the labour council had unofficially supported candidates in the past. "The labour council takes no position to support a candidate that has not formally applied to the council and sought our endorsement."

HEAR FROM CANDIDATES

New Westminster residents who missed out on the first two all-candidates meetings of the 2011 civic election campaign still have a chance to hear what local politicos have to say.

The Queen's Park Residents' Association is holding an all-candidates meeting for mayoral and council candidates on Sunday, Nov. 6 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Centennial Lodge in Queen's Park.

The district parents advisory council is holding an all-candidates debate for mayor and school trustee candidates on Thursday, Nov. 10 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the New Westminster Secondary School library at 835 Eighth St.

NEXT New West, New Westminster Environmental Partners and the Tenth to the Fraser blog are holding an election mixer on Wednesday, Nov. 2 (tonight) from 5: 30 to 8 p.m. at Lafflines Theatre. A comic will begin around 6 p.m., followed by candidate introductions and open networking.

The free event is designed to give voters a chance to connect one-onone and question the mayoral, council and school board candidates. Because liquor will be served, people must be 19 or older to attend the event.
