A man is dead after he was hit by a car near Royal Columbian Hospital on Saturday.

New Westminster Police aren’t saying much about the fatality as they are still in the early stages of the investigation. The crash happened around 6:15 a.m. on East Columbia Street near Keary Street. Evidence suggests the driver of the vehicle was headed east when it hit the pedestrian, who was crossing East Columbia Street, Acting Sgt. Jeff Scott told the Record.

Scott couldn’t say whether the pedestrian was crossing in a crosswalk, but it appears the collision happened mid-block.

“We’re still looking at all the different factors which may have led up to the collision happening,” he added.

Scott said he doesn’t believe the victim, a 54-year-old man from Surrey, was a patient at the hospital.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Investigators do not believe speed, drugs or alcohol are factors in this crash, Scott said.

East Columbia Street was closed for about five hours while the collision and reconstruction team collected evidence.
