A man has been arrested and faces a slew of charges after he led Surrey RCMP on a chase in a stolen van that ended in the corner of a garage in New Westminster late Thursday night.
According to Staff-Sgt. Blair McColl, the white van was initially stopped in Surrey when the report of the stolen vehicle came in, but the driver backed into the police car and fled the scene.
Police pursued the car across the Pattullo Bridge into New Westminster, but called off the chase when it started to reach high speeds.
"After the pursuit was called off and the vehicle had disappeared, the area was saturated (with officers)," said McColl.
The van was seen going along North Road, along the Burnaby-Coquitlam border before it was found abandoned after it crashed into the corner of a garage at a home on Richmond Street in New Westminster.
The man, in his early twenties, was located by New Westminster's police dog and taken into custody.
According to McColl the man faces a number of charges including causing a pursuit, flight from police, possession of stolen property, dangerous driving and possibly more.
"We did receive information there was a warrant for his arrest and also we had a report the vehicle was stolen," said McColl.
But as for the wild-goose chase, it wasn't particularly high-speed, he said.
"For much of it the vehicle was actually signalling turns ... obeying the rules of the road - for the most part," he said.
The man will appear in Surrey court Friday morning.
