Queensborough and Quayside residents may be able to enjoy spring without fear of flooding.
A staff report to council indicates there is a "low potential" for flooding on the Fraser River this spring. Snow packs across B.C. are generally below the levels that were observed last year, and two-thirds of the annual snow pack has normally accumulated by this time of the season.
"While there is still two-and-a-half months left in the snow accumulation season, given short-term and seasonal outlooks, the current snow pack is not expected to change significantly over the remainder of the season," stated the March 11 report to council. "Current conditions and forecast do no indicate a high likelihood of extreme wet or dry seasonal weather through the remaining accumulation season."
According to staff, the freshet preparation work plan and high water response plan have been updated since the significant event in 2012. Freshet is when the river rises due to melting snow and heavy rains.
"The snow pack will be monitored and work will continue according to the preparation plan until either the risk has reduced or additional measures are deemed necessary," stated the report.
At this time the city has no plan to spend money on flood-mitigation measures, other than what's required for staff time to monitor the river basin conditions and to complete the dike inspection crest survey.
"Additional financial resources may be required to implement flood mitigation measures depending on the upcoming freshet condition," stated the report. "Recommendations and associated costs with appropriate flood mitigation response will be identified over the coming weeks and months and will be presented to council for consideration."
