A man is expecting to be reunited with his ice cream truck soon after a thief allegedly ran out of fuel near Abbotsford.

Meedo Falou, owner of Coquitlam-based Rainbow Ice Cream, says the driver of one of his ice cream trucks stopped at Save-On-Foods at Highgate Mall in Burnaby at the end of his shift to buy some groceries. When he left the store, however, he saw the truck driving away.

The driver reportedly gave another driver at the mall $20 to follow the ice cream truck, but ultimately lost sight of it.

Saturday morning, Falou said, Burnaby RCMP gave him contact information for Fraser Valley RCMP, which does traffic enforcement along Highway 1.

“Apparently, the thieves abandoned the truck on the highway just by an exit in Abbotsford … I think he ran out of propane; the truck [runs on] propane,” Falou said with a laugh.

Falou still isn’t sure whether the truck has taken any damage or whether any equipment has gone missing from the truck.

He also isn’t sure when he’ll get the truck back – he’s been asked to call RCMP on Monday to get an update.

The theft of the truck could have been for a joy ride or any other reason, Falou said, adding no suspect has been arrested.
