A local group that’s helped outfit many local teens for their high school graduations is in a state of transition.

Six years ago, Joanne Lapp, Kathy Wilson, Darcey Sudeyko, Cindy Carlson, Barb Henderson, Lynn Lenaghan and Nancy Bruce joined forces and founded You Wear it Well … Just for Grads, a program that provided New West (and, more recently, Burnaby) graduates with free, pre-loved gowns or tuxes and accessories for their graduation festivities. Each spring, the group holds a Boutique Day where grads “shop” for their outfit and are pampered with services like hair and makeup, before having their photos taken.

A recent notice posted on the You Wear it Well Facebook page stated the organizers have decided it’s time to “pass the torch” to a new group of community-minded individuals who will take control of the not-for-profit organization. The group is willing to share all its information and donate all its inventory to anyone willing to take on the project.

“We have found our experience with You Wear it Well…Just for Grads to be truly rewarding, and have witnessed first-hand the transformation of many young people’s lives,” said the Facebook posting. “We are certain that the new committee will find this experience equally as fulfilling.”

Kudos to the founders of You Wear it Well for making graduation unforgettable for local youths – and to any new folks stepping forward to continue efforts to make grad memorable for local graduates.
