Local duo involved in Fringe musical

New Westminster tea shop owner set to play lead role in upcoming fest production

A pair of Royal City residents are keeping busy this summer in the Vancouver theatre scene.

Both Barbara Tomasic and Lauren Bowler are involved in Goblin Market, a new musical being produced as part of this year's Vancouver Fringe Festival.

Tomasic, an instructor at Capilano University who was born and raised in New Westminster -attending both New Westminster Secondary School and Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary -is directing the production.

Bowler, an owner of the Great Wall Tea Company at River Market, will play Lizzie, of the two main characters.

The musical, set in an outdoor venue on Granville Island, was written by Polly Pen and Peggy Harmon, and was based on the poem by Christina Rossetti.

It explores the sexually charged fantasies of two sisters who reunite as adults to relive their childhood experiences in an imaginary world peopled by goblins.

"This sensual voyage through the labyrinths of the imagination will weave an enchanting spell that will linger long in your memory," states a press release on the production.

Fringe Festival runs from Sept. 8 to 18. For tickets and more information on the Vancouver Fringe Festival: www.vancouver fringe.com/ticket-information.www.twitter.com/ChristinaMyersA
