Classical music for all

The Langendorf Mandolin Orchestra will be in town on Sunday, Aug. 23 as part of their first Canadian tour.
The German group uses the mandolin, a descendant of the lute family. It has frets, four pairs of metal strings and is played with a pick.
Langendorf Mandolin Orchestra formed in 1973 and consists of 34 members, aged 12 to 68. Their repertoire includes concert pieces from the Baroque era to the present day. The group tours every three or four years, having previously travelled to Norway, France, India and many other countries.
The curtain rises at 2 p.m. at the Sapperton Pensioners Hall, located at 318 Keary St. Tickets cost $10 and can be picked up at the door.

A boat cruise and a poem

A local poet will be aboard the Paddlewheeler this Sunday (Aug. 23), writing poems for anyone interested in taking home a little souvenir.
Catherine Owen has teamed up with Paddlewheeler Riverboat Tours, offering her verses free of charge.
“I’ll be working on poems about the Pattullo Bridge, but also I’m open to occasional poems for people who are there for birthdays, anniversaries, you know, special moments,” Owen said.
The local resident has two degrees in English and has been writing stories about the Fraser River since moving opposite to the river in 2011.
The Sunday cruise to Steveston harbour is a full-day event, departing from the Quay at 9:30 a.m. and returning at 5 p.m. It is fully narrated, so expect to learn a few things. It includes a buffet-style luncheon and a two-hour layover near the Britannia Heritage Shipyards historic site.
Whether it’s a birthday or an anniversary, Owen said she’s happy to be part of the Paddlewheeler team.
“It’s a way of connecting the public with poetry and having them feel that it has an energy and a reason for being beyond what people sometimes remember.”
