Ever wanted to make your very own chapbook?
The Royal City Literary Arts Society is organizing a chapbook workshop this weekend with host Kevin Spenst. Attendees will learn everything from conquering writer’s block and various editing strategies to creating new poetry with prompts.
Participants are asked to bring a pen and paper. It’s happening on Saturday, July 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. at 737 Sixth St. The workshop fee is $15 for society members and $25 for non-members. Seating is limited, so pre-registration is required. Email [email protected].

Free music concert
Make sure to stop by the Quay this weekend for Music by the River, a summer concert series inside the River Market.
Taking the stage on Saturday, July 23 is Emily Worden-Kwok, a folk and Christian artist who has been singing since the age of five. Her acoustic guitar and soprano vocals put a new twist on favourite tunes and hymns alike. She’ll be performing from noon till 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Of past, present and future
Mark Wednesday, July 27 on your calendars, art lovers. That’s the opening reception of the Royal City Manor Breaks Barriers Through Art exhibit, presented by the Arts Council of New Westminster.
The artwork is by some of the city’s most senior citizens living in the long-term care facility, who have a variety of cognitive and physical impairments.
“They do not actively dwell on their deficits, loss and sadness that normally dominate discussions around memory loss and dementia. Rather, these artists take the opportunity to focus on the positive through their communication, creativity and social interaction in a structured program,” reads an exhibition statement.
The show runs until July 31 at The Gallery at Queen’s Park. The opening reception on July 27 goes from 6 to 8 p.m. Artists will be in attendance on the weekend. For more details, visit artscouncilnew

Do the crawl, the cultural crawl
It’s not for a few weeks, but we’re always a fan of giving our readers plenty of heads-up.
The 13th annual New West Cultural Crawl is on Aug. 13 and 14, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. More than 50 artists will be spread out over five neighbourhoods and 23 venues. Whether it’s uptown or Queensborough, no corner of the city has been left out.
Organizers have created a user-friendly guide, fully equipped with Google map directions, for anyone looking to make a day of it.
