FALL AT VAN DOP

Autumn officially began last weekend, and soon the leaves will start turning brilliant shades of gold and red. As F. Scott Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby said, "Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall."

Why not embrace the new season by enjoying some seasonally celebratory artwork at a local gallery?

The Van Dop Gallery presents Colours of the Season, a showing of works by New Westminster artist Jim Walsh.

Join the artist on Sept. 29 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the gallery for an opening reception at 421 Richmond St. where his dynamic mix of paintings, photography and graphic design will be on display. Walsh's career spans more than 30 years, and his work has been shown in galleries and at exhibitions all over North America, as well as in numerous publications, including the Artists of British Columbia Vol. 2 - available at the Van Dop Gallery.

RIVER DAY FEST

The boardwalk at Westminster Quay will be the place to be for live music this weekend.

Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Andrew Allen will headline New Westminster's new waterfront celebration - RiverFest - on Saturday, Sept. 29 as part of B.C. Rivers Day.

Held in conjunction with B.C. and World Rivers Day, this event celebrates the city's traditional connection to the Fraser River.

Allen has scored two Top 10 hits in Canada, I Wanna Be Your Christmas and Loving You Tonight.

The Hyack Festival Association and the Fraser River Discovery Centre are co-producing the event, which includes other top B.C.-based performers such as Headwater, The Matinee, The Washboard Union, Lester Quitzau and Catlow.

"We are absolutely delighted with the YVR Main Stage lineup," said Douglas Smith, executive director for the Hyack Festival Association, in a press release.

RiverFest is the result of combining two previous events held on the Quay - Hyack's FraserFest and Artists on the River.

The hallmark Paddlewheeler boat tours and workboat parade are returning, along with art exhibits and interactive activities.

The family-friendly festival takes place on Sept.

28 and 29.
