Royal City residents are invited to light up the night at the Lantern Festival in the 'Boro.
The Queensborough special programs committee is teaming up with the City of New Westminster and Aragon Development for the lantern festival that will take place on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Port Royal Park, which is at the east end of Ewen Ave. The event includes the assembly of LED powered lanterns, picture drawing using sparklers, a scavenger hunt with lanterns and live musical entertainment.
"It's an idea from Aragon. They wanted to do something in the Port Royal area for the community," said Cheryl Rogers, a member of the special programs committee. "We decided to partner up. It should be a fantastic night. It's a new thing. We want everybody to come and check it out."
The Queensborough special programs committee would normally be working on the Urban Farmers Fall Fair this month, but construction at the Queensborough Community has prevented that from taking place this year.
The committee is excited about the addition and the new amenities that will be offered at the community centre when the expansion is complete.
"We will be planning events and activities for the upcoming year," Rogers said. "Normally we would be dealing with Urban Farmers Fall Fair. We can't do that this year. We just want people to know we are still in existence."
While construction continues at the
community centre, the committee has carried on with planning for community events.
"We had our Summer Sizzle entertainment program in the park," Rogers noted. "We also had a really good program with the all-wheel park."
Rogers said the committee is looking at all of its existing events and will decide whether they should continue in their current format or should be changed in some way.
"We are looking into what we are going to do with the new facility," Rogers said. "We don't know if we are going to do all the same events in the same format. Things may not be exactly the same."
The Queensborough special programs committee formed in 1995 to foster community spirit, to coordinate and support projects and events in Queensborough, and to improve and enhance public amenities.
"We promote synergy and connectivity between the community groups," Rogers said.
