Fire performers are the latest entries into this weekend's Parade of Lights.
The Christmas Parade of Lights will take place in downtown New Westminster on Saturday, Dec. 1 starting at 4 p.m. Following the parade that runs along Columbia Street (from Fourth to Eighth streets), a tree-lighting ceremony will take place in Hyack Square.
The post-parade fun includes food vendors, children's activities, a photo booth (where people can have photos taken with Santa) and entertainment.
Douglas Smith, executive director of the Hyack Festival Association, said two fire performers have been confirmed and should really "wow" the crowd. The association anticipates that the fire performers will have two 15-minute performances at 5: 30 and 6: 30 p.m.
Country singer A.J. Woodworth, winner of the 2011 British Columbia Country Music Awards Female Artist of the Year, is headlining the musical lineup.
New Westminster native Jon Cornish, who recently led the Calgary Stampeders to the Grey Cup, is the parade marshal in the CIBC Christmas Parade of Lights. He's agreed to stick around for the tree lighting and to sign autographs in Hyack Square.
Cornish was a West Division finalist for Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian in the CFL.
"We are very pleased to have Jon as our honorary parade marshal this year," said Bill Radbourne, president of the Hyack Festival Association. "Jon has enjoyed a brilliant season in the Canadian Football League and we are delighted to highlight his accomplishments."
Cornish, 28, broke Normie Kwong's 56-year-old single season rushing record for Canadians and was also named Canadian Player of the Week on seven occasions this season.
"I am looking forward to returning to my hometown for the CIBC Christmas Parade of Lights and I certainly appreciate the invitation from Hyack to act as honorary parade marshal," Cornish said. "It is always nice to interact with the community and this will be a great chance to hang with the kids and help kick off the Christmas season."
