The New Westminster Secondary School is expanding its popular apprenticeship programs, which offer students a head-start on in-demand careers.

The school has received a government grant to put on a Trades Awareness Day for Grade 9 students to promote the school's new Discover Apprenticeship 10 program, said career programs coordinator Karen Crosby, in an email.

Guests will include professionals such as a diesel mechanic from Coast Mountain Bus Company; chefs from Joey's Restaurant, Marmalade Restaurant, Morgan Creek Golf Course, Hotel Georgia and Meinhardts Restaurant; an electrician from City of New Westminster; a machinist and welder from Quality Machine Works; carpenters from Ram Construction, PCL Construction and North Valley Contracting; plumber from Keith Plumbing; two red seal technology teachers and six technology education teachers and one red seal chef teacher.

"With these teachers and trades workers, the 250-plus students will participate in challenging hands-on activities for the full day," Crosby wrote.

"There will be a keynote that all of the school will be invited to in the morning, and then the students will participate in two trades of their choice."

Crosby pointed out the demand for trades people in the province.

The event is at the high school on Friday, Feb. 15, from 8: 40 a.m. to 3: 10 p.m.
