An early morning trip to the laundry room sparked a fire in a Sapperton apartment building.

Fire inspector Brent Joel said a small fire occurred in an apartment building on Sherbrooke Street, after a resident used a dryer at about 4 a.m.

The fire occurred in the wall between a laundry room and one of the building's storage rooms.

"The guys ripped out part of the wall," he said about firefighters who attended. "It was really small. It was confined to a small area."

Joel said the building's wiring had been installed many years ago, and had likely deteriorated over time.

For some reason, the dryer was enough to trigger the fire.

"B.C. Safety Authority came in and took a look at it," Joel said. "He agreed this is really old wiring. Chances are it was done properly. Over time, it wears."

Joel said the fire caused less than $1,000 damage, which included damage to wall studs and wiring.

He said the fire occurred in a concrete basement and didn't spread elsewhere in the apartment building.
