Kettle helpers wanted

It's time again to start warming up your singing voice and your bell-ringing arm. The Salvation Army is kicking off its campaign to find hosts for its donation kettles.

Volunteers are needed to host the kettles at major New Westminster locations from the morning of Nov. 15, right up until the afternoon of Christmas Eve.

"We're looking for volunteers. Our shifts can range anywhere from a couple hours to a full eight-hour shift," said Nadine March, kettle co-ordinator. "We're uptown at Royal Square, Royal City Centre, the Westminster Centre. Downtown, we've got Columbia Square. We have some locations over in Queensborough as well and one in Sapperton."

Keeping the kettles well attended and full of donations is crucial to the Salvation Army's mission of reaching out to those in need, March said.

"This campaign funds all of our programs for family services for the year. This is our one big fundraiser that helps out all year long with everything we run," she said.

There's also something very rewarding that comes with giving of yourself, according to David Wilfong, kettle co-ordinator for the Burnaby Salvation Army.

"The second greatest commandment is to help others. One of the great feelings is helping someone and not expecting to receive anything back for it," he said.
