The Justice Institute of B.C. is offering emergency funding to help students who are struggling in the face of the COVID-19 crisis.

The New Westminster-based school, which offers training for justice and public safety professionals, has established a new emergency assistance fund – and it’s launched a public appeal for donations to help.

The campaign was launched May 5 in connection with Giving Tuesday, a global day designed to raise awareness of the needs arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

A press release from the institution notes that JIBC was fortunate to receive funding from the provincial government to help students in need of emergency financial support as a result of the pandemic. But more than 70 applications were received for that funding in the first 10 days, and JIBC expects to exhaust those funds quickly.

To help provide assistance to more students, JIBC has set up a new emergency assistance fund, with an initial amount from the Rix Family Foundation Endowment held by the JIBC Foundation.

The fund will provide financial support for JIBC students now and into the future who are faced with unexpected financial challenges. All donations to the fund through the Giving Tuesday Now appeal will be matched up to a total of $5,000.

To make a donation, complete the form online at jibc.ca/donate or send a cheque (payable to the JIBC Foundation) indicating it’s for Giving Tuesday Now, to the JIBC Foundation, 715 McBride Blvd., New Westminster, V3L 5T4.
