The Terry Fox Run is heading downtown in 2012.

After being held in Queen's Park for many years, the New Westminster run is relocating to the Quay. This year's run takes place on Sunday, Sept. 16.

"I am very excited," said Kathy Jones, organizer of the event. "I am very optimistic that this is going to be a total success."

Jones is thrilled to be able to try out the new, flat location for the annual fundraising run. While Queen's Park has been a great location, she said the hills on the Millennium Trail can be challenging.

"Please come and check it out," she urged residents.

Jones is pleased with the support she's received from River Market, which is allowing registration to take place at its food hall. Businesses will be offering specials to participants.

"Last year we had about 250 people," Jones said. "It's grown from about 80 or 90."

Jones hopes the new location will appeal to people.

"It has the potential to be really terrific. I just need people to get out," she said.

Jones hopes the community will come out and support Fox.

"There is no entry fee, there is no minimum pledge," she said.

Participants can run, walk, bike, rollerblade or push a wheelchair or stroller on the route that runs along the Quay and through Westminster Pier Park. People can choose routes ranging from one to 10 kilometres.

Registration for New Westminster's Terry Fox Run gets underway at 9 a.m. in River Market at 810 Quayside Dr. The run gets underway at 10 a.m.
