Gingerbread scented Play Dough, giant puzzles and lots of playmates is a great recipe for a fun child day. The National Child Day celebration in New Westminster last week included all of the above and more.

Westminster's early and middle childhood development committees hosted a National Child Day celebration at Lord Kelvin Elementary School on Nov. 17.

Karen Corcione, who is involved with the committees, said the event celebrates National Day of the Child and children's rights.

"We have an event every year," she noted. "It's the first time we have had all three age groups."

The committee opted to hold an event for children up to the age of 12 because of requests from the community. In addition to expanding, organizers got teenagers involved by having them volunteer at some of the stations.

"We were pretty happy with the spread of ages there and the variety of activities," Corcione said. "The turnout was solid. We had almost 90 people there."

Corcione said the committees also put on an event every spring, and she encourages people to watch for details about that event in the new year.
