A jury will hear from witnesses of a fatal 2012 shooting outside of Starlight Casino when the B.C. Coroners Service holds a public inquest in February next year.
On Tuesday, the coroners service announced it would hold a public inquest into the death of Mehrad Bayrami beginning Feb. 9, 2016.
Bayrami, 48, was shot outside the Starlight Casino in Queensborough on Nov. 18, 2012, following a five-hour standoff with police. The Richmond resident died in hospital 10 days later.
Last year, charges were laid against the Delta police officer who was alleged to have shot Bayrami, causing his death. These charges were stayed a short while later citing lack of evidence.
At the public inquest, a presiding coroner, Dr. D. Kelly Barnard in this case, and a jury will hear form witnesses about the facts of the fatal police-involved shooting. Once all witnesses have been heard, the jury will have an opportunity to make recommendations “aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances,” stated the release.
The inquest starts at 9:30 a.m. at the coroners court in Burnaby.
