An instructor at Douglas College says tuition should be cut in half to help students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

All in-person classes at Douglas College in New Westminster are cancelled due to concerns about COVID-19, effective immediately, according to a post on the college’s website.

The college is looking at alternative methods of instruction for the rest of the winter semester.

“Instructors will provide students with information on how to complete course work, including final exams,” the post stated. “This could be online, through self-directed study or other means, depending on the nature of the course or program.”

The campus will still be open, but there will be some reduction in service levels, according to the post.

The college has not had any cases of COVID-19 reported, the post stated.

“All measures being taken by Douglas College are being done out of an abundance of caution to help reduce the transfer of COVID-19 and in recognition of the stress and anxiety this situation is causing many students, faculty and other employees,” the post stated. “COVID-19 represents an unprecedented health challenge, and it is up to all individuals and institutions to follow the best advice available from provincial health authorities to help reduce the spread of the virus.”

Students and the community are advised to check the college website and their emails regularly for updates.
