Hyack Festival dismisses director

New Westminster's Hyack Festival Association is on the lookout for a new executive director after announcing that Douglas Smith was let go effective July 31.

New Westminster's Hyack Festival Association is on the lookout for a new executive director after announcing that Douglas Smith was let go effective July 31.

Gavin Palmer, president of the association, wouldn't provide any details concerning the reasons why Smith was "no longer affiliated with the Hyack Festival Association."

"As it was a human resources matter, and to protect his privacy, I cannot make any comment at this time," Palmer said.

Palmer responded to comments from an association board member who said Palmer and the executive committee didn't have the authority to dismiss Smith, according to other media reports.

Palmer told The Record this wasn't accurate but wouldn't delve any further into the issue.

"As it happens, there's an amount of misinformation that has come about and that is not the case," he said. "We will have that all straightened out next week."

Palmer said he expected the association would release more information after an Aug. 6 board meeting, after Record deadlines. The Record couldn't reach Smith for comment.
