New Westminster's Hyack Festival Association is on the lookout for a new executive director after announcing that Douglas Smith was let go effective July 31.

Gavin Palmer, president of the association, wouldn't provide any details concerning the reasons why Smith was "no longer affiliated with the Hyack Festival Association."

"As it was a human resources matter and to protect his privacy I cannot make any comment at this time," said Gavin Palmer, president of the association.

Palmer responded to comments from an association board member who said Palmer and the executive committee didn't have the authority to dismiss Smith, according to other media reports.

Palmer told The Record this wasn't accurate but wouldn't delve any further into the issue.

"As it happens, there's an amount of misinformation that has come about and that is not the case," he said. "We will have that all straightened out next week."

Palmer said he expects the association will release more information for clarification after next Tuesday's board meeting.

The Record couldn't reach Douglas Smith for comment at this time.
