Are you ready to howl?

Get ready to throw your head back and howl at the full wolf moon this month as it rises in Metro Vancouver skies.

The first moon of the year has been known by many names, but people have referred to it as the wolf moon for centuries. Other popular names for January's moon include the cold moon, hard moon, great moon, and Canada goose moon, among many others.

"In Native American and early Colonial times, the Full Moon for January was called the Full Wolf Moon. It appeared when wolves howled in hunger outside the villages," explains The Old Farmer's Almanac.

But there is no evidence to support that wolves howl due to hunger. Instead, the Almanac notes that they tend to howl more during the winter months and to define territory, locate pack members, and gather for hunting.

The moon will be at its fullest in Metro Vancouver skies on Jan. 17 at 3:48 p.m. in the afternoon, according to timeanddate.com. Of course, the sky won't be dark enough to see the moon at that time, but it will appear full for several hours overnight.
