New Westminster school district has published its annual SOFI (statement of financial information) report.

Fifty-six employees of the New Westminster school district earned more than $100,000 last year.

School District 40 has released its annual statement of financial information (SOFI) report, covering the 2020/21 year. Every school district in B.C. is provincially mandated to publish the document, which lists all employees earning more than $75,000 a year.

New Westminster’s report showed a total of 328 employees earning more than the $75,000 cutoff, up from 307 the previous year.

The number of employees at the $100,000 level is also up, from 49 last year to this year’s 56.

Of those, four employees surpassed the $150,000 mark: executive director of human resources Robert Weston at $159,575, secretary-treasurer Bettina Ketcham at $168,874, associate superintendent Maryam Naser at $175,521, and superintendent Karim Hachlaf, the sole staffer to top $200K, at $211,020.

The remainder of the employees earning more than $100,000 include:

  • 5 senior district staff (director of capital projects, assistant secretary-treasurer, director of operations, two directors of instruction)
  • 29 administrative officers (principals and vice-principals, both district-wide and school-based)
  • 18 teachers

In total, the district paid out $31.6 million in remuneration and $75,841 in expenses for all the employees earning more than $75,000.

It also paid out $26.7 million in remuneration and $75,938 in expenses for all its employees earning $75,000 or less.

The SOFI report also shows the amount paid to elected officials: $182,036 for the seven school board trustees, plus a combined $3,193 in expenses.

Trustees earned $25,250.64 apiece, with larger amounts to former chair Anita Ansari ($26,717), vice-chair Dee Beattie ($26,277) and former vice-chair/current chair Gurveen Dhaliwal ($28,038).
