New Westminster's Fraser River Discovery Centre Society recently announced plans to induct Michael Owen into its Hall of Fame for his "pioneering spirit and decades of advocacy for the river."
Owen is a founding member of the Floating Home Association of B.C., which advocates for floating home communities. His work resulted in the creation of safe, enjoyable floating home communities, including his own community of Ladner Reach, a former industrial parcel of Ladner waterfront that was transformed into a charming community of floating homes, states a media release.
"Throughout Mr. Owen's involvement in river-related issues, he has always considered the good of his community of Delta, and we believed it was important to announce the news in his community, amongst his friends and colleagues," said Catherine Ouellet-Martin, executive director for the Discovery Centre, who made the announcement of Owen's selection before members of the Delta Chamber of Commerce and the Ladner Business Association this week. "His dedication to the river and to his community as it relates to the river spans decades and has touched many."
Owen has been involved in numerous board and services groups. He also helped with the fundraising and construction of a section of the Millennium trail to provide connectivity on the Ladner waterfront from Deas Island to Captain Cove Marina. Owen's dedication to the project led to collaboration between all three levels of government, community and industry, and inspired significant donations from river-based industries to create a trail for the benefit and enjoyment of the public, the release states.
Owen will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 7, at the Discovery Centre during an evening of fine food and refreshments.
The Fraser River Discovery Centre Society established the Fraser River Hall of Fame 22 years ago to recognize and honour individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the health and sustainability of the Fraser River.
