Just say Yes: New Westminster Secondary School student Sadie DeCoste is part of a Vote Yes New West coalition that’s encouraging citizens to support a .05 per cent hike in the provincial sales tax to fund transit and transportation improvements recommended by the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation.

A youth rally in support of the Yes side for the upcoming transit plebiscite is scheduled for this Sunday.

Students from NWSS's environment club will gather at the New Westminster SkyTrain station at noon and walk over to Hyack Square around 12:45 p.m.

"Our region is facing a big decision that will affect our futures in a really tangible way, and it's something that as our population grows, we need to have these improvements for our quality of life and for vulnerable people in a population who need a reliable way to get around," said organizer and past president Sadie DeCoste.

A majority of club members are under 18 and can't vote, which gives their message more "power," she added.

"We want to tell our parents, who are going to be voting, that despite the fact we're unable to vote, we do care and it's something we're going to inherit," DeCoste said.

The group plans to wave bright signs, talk with passerby and have guest speakers share their thoughts about the importance of voting.
