A 1928 house in the West End will be saved as part of a heritage revitalization agreement.
New Westminster city council has approved a heritage revitalization agreement and heritage designation for the property at 1935 Eighth Ave. In exchange for retaining, restoring and designating the existing Munroe house, the city will allow the applicant to subdivide the property and build a new house on the new parcel.
According to a staff report, the community heritage commission and the advisory planning commission support the proposal.
Coun. Patrick Johnstone was the lone council member to vote against the heritage revitalization agreement bylaw and the heritage destination bylaw. While the project is consistent with the city’s official community plan, he thinks that area is better suited for higher density developments.
“To me, this house is too close to a SkyTrain, where we need to be thinking about more dense development than to be preserving a single-family home,” he said.
