Climate activists are inviting community members to celebrate Earth Day in New Westminster.

RegenerateBC and the New Westminster Climate Hub are collaborating to host an educational event on Saturday, April 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the boardwalk near Fraser River Discovery Centre.

“The event on April 20 will focus on five solutions to spark conversations that show what is being done or can be done towards solutions,” Betty Furey told council on April 8. “The now- famous Monkey Rebels from Glenbrook Middle School have agreed to join us. They are a lively addition.”

Furey said the event will be an opportunity for residents to access climate information and find out how to become involved.

“It will help us know what kind of information New West residents are interested in,” she added. “Becoming more aware of what is being done towards solutions worldwide provides hope and helps lessen climate anxiety. We invite you to come to the Quay on April the 20th to say hello and have a look at what we are doing.”

RegenerateBC climate action and education society is a non-profit that focuses on providing science-based climate solutions that address the climate crisis and regenerate the planet.

According to Furey, RegenerateBC hosts workshops throughout B.C., one of which was held at the New Westminster Public Library a year ago. It was led by three facilitators from New Westminster who are all climate activists.

Furey said the facilitators and participants have continued to meet regularly.

“The group has grown and deals with climate issues at both the local and provincial level,” she said. “The group recently applied for and were accepted as a municipal climate hub. These hubs connect communities across B.C. and allow us to share resources and support each other to address the crisis.”

Furey said the facilitators for New West have led workshops in several surrounding communities, including Earth Day events in Surrey and Mission. Now, the New West Climate Hub, through RegenerateBC, is set to host an Earth Day event it its own community of New West.
