Have a spooky good weekend

With Halloween right around the corner, there's no shortage of spooktacular fun for families and man's best friend. Not to worry - if Halloween's just not your thing, we've got a couple of ideas for you, too.

With Halloween right around the corner, there's no shortage of spooktacular fun for families and man's best friend. Not to worry - if Halloween's just not your thing, we've got a couple of ideas for you, too. Here are The Record staff's picks for the Top Five (or More) Things to Do for the Oct. 26 to 28 weekend:

1 Explore the human body at the opening reception of the Heritage Life Drawing Society's latest exhibition. Formed in 2007, the society's members continue to explore the unending challenge of portraying the human body. The society's new exhibit takes place at Network Hub, which is located on the upper level of River Market at 810 Quayside Dr. The opening reception takes place on Friday, Oct. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. and continues until Dec. 7 (where the art can be seen Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

2 Fetch Fifi or Fido's costume and drop by the third annual Petrifying Pooch Parade and have a doggone good time. Hosted by Calli Co. Pet Services, the event includes prizes for most original costume, scariest costume and funniest costume. The event includes a pet parade (at 1 p.m.), Halloween doggy bags for all pet participants, and hot chocolate and treats for their human companions. Calli Co, a New Westminster-based pet-service company, is promising a "woof-tacular" time for all who attend the event that takes place on Saturday, Oct. 27 from noon to 2 p.m. at the off-leash area in Queen's Park.

3 Scare up some good fun at the Haunted Halloween Family Skate at Moody Park Arena. Staff is planning to have lots of creepy, crawly fun for your enjoyment - both on and off the ice. Kids and parents are invited to dress in costume for the family skate, which takes place Saturday, Oct. 27 from 6: 30 to 8 p.m. at Moody Park Arena (701 Eighth Ave.). Regular admission rates apply. For more information, call the arena at 604-525-5301.

4 Have a howling good time at Poetic Justice's Halloween Howler, which takes place on Sunday, Oct. 28 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Heritage Grill (447 Columbia St.). Hosted by Alan Hill, the event's featured poets are Manolis, Mark Hossfeld and Pam Galloway. People are encouraged to wear costumes (maybe dress up as your favourite poet?) and share creepy, dark-themed poems during the open mike portion of the event. A prize will be awarded for best costume. For more information, visit www.poeticjustice.ca.

5 Support underprivileged kids through Kidsport New West, which is holding an event at the Pantry restaurant on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 425 Sixth St. The group helps provide financial assistance that allows children to play organized sports. Parents can register their kids at the event, which includes food, fun, games and prizes. For more information about Kidsport New West, visit wwwkidsportnewwest.ca.

6 Get your photo taken in the Haunted Giggle House at Royal City Centre. The mall is getting into the Halloween spirit with a spooky window scavenger hunt and free photo opportunities in its haunted giggle house. The fun takes place on Saturday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 610 Sixth St.
