Work on the Pattullo Bridge replacement project is underway and requires a northbound lane closure this week.

If you plan to cross the Pattullo Bridge this weekend, you’ll want to take note of an overnight closure that’s taking place starting Friday night.

The third of four overnight closures of the northbound lane on the Pattullo Bridge – the one heading to New Westminster from Surrey – is set to take place on Friday, Aug. 19 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. The closure also affects the lanes on the bridge connector.

“In June, crews began work to rehabilitate the Royal Avenue overpass as part of the Pattullo Bridge replacement project,” said a notice from the Pattullo Bridge replacement project team. “The first stage of work will be completed from the bridge connector roadway under the overpass, and requires up to four overnight closures of the Pattullo Bridge in the northbound direction, as well as a closure of the Bridge Connector in New Westminster.”

A fourth closure to the northbound lane will be required so additional overnight work can be done, but the date for that work has yet to be determined. Previous nighttime closures took place on June 24 and July 22.

According to the notice, nearby residents may hear some noise associated with overnight work activities.

Pattullo Bridge users who are heading to New Westminster are encouraged to take the Port Mann or Alex Fraser bridges during the northbound lane closures. During the closure, northbound N19 NightBus trips will be rerouted over the Queensborough and Alex Fraser bridges, so customers are advised to plan for an additional 30 minutes of travel time.

The notice states that TransLink’s single lane closure for southbound traffic on the Pattullo Bridge will remain in effect, but one southbound lane will remain open. Motorists coming from McBride Boulevard will be detoured to use the Columbia Street on-ramp, and the Royal Avenue on-ramp will remain open.

The project includes construction of a new four-lane bridge that will include modern, wider lanes, separated by a centre median barrier, as well as dedicated walking and cycling lanes on both sides of the bridge that are separated from traffic by a barrier. It’s scheduled to open in 2024.
