Groundwork has begun on the modular housing project in Queensborough, the city says.

In a recent update published on the City of New Westminster’s website, officials said site servicing work began on July 30, with installation of underground utilities. That was expected to run two weeks, with one of those installations expected to close part of the nearby off-leash dog park until Friday, Aug. 9.

Officials say the off-leash dog area, which will be separated with construction fencing, will be restored to its original condition once work is completed.

As the utility installations near completion, the foundation for the modular housing project is expected to begin, along with preloading work for the Carter Street access road.

Officials did not respond to an email request for comment on any disruptions that may occur in the weeks that follow, but in its update online the city said updates will continue to be provided on the project.

The city has previously said the project, located at 838 Ewen Ave., is expected to be completed in December this year or January 2020.

Council approved the 44-unit modular housing project in June 2018 following a public hearing that saw about 100 speakers and 250 attendees. The project will provide housing for women at risk of or facing homelessness, and will be run by the Elizabeth Fry Society.

The housing is part of thousands of modular units promised by the B.C. government after its 2017 election as part of a rapid response to homelessness.
