Royal City Farmers Market will be returning a $10,000 grant to the city.

The market received a $10,000 city grant that was to be used for a nutritional coupon program in New Westminster.

When it learned that the province would be administering a similar program, the market sought and received the city's approval to use the funds for an after-school food school program at a local school.

The program was meant to teach youngsters the benefits of eating healthy, fresh, local food where available.

Andrew Murray, president of the Royal City Farmers Market, said the food program won't be proceeding as planned and the board has voted to return the money to the city.
