Wcelebrate

Whether you want to have some fun with the family, celebrate new businesses in the city or get inspired, there's something taking place to your liking this weekend in New Westminster.

We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. Here are our recommendations for Nov. 16 to 18:

1 Celebrate National Child Day at a free event for families with children aged one to 12. Storytelling, crafts, face painting and snacks are all part of the fun at the event that's taking place on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Lord Kelvin Elementary School, 1010 Hamilton St.

Play it Fair, a national program that promotes activities that strengthen children's social skills, will provide games that focus on responsibility, cooperation and diversity.

The event also includes a "Brain Dance" session and free resource bags for families who register to attend.

To register, email info@ kidsnewwest.ca.

2Find some inspiration at Inspiration Day, which is being held on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 10: 30 a.m. to 1: 30 p.m. at Century House.

The fun-filled day features keynote speaker Dr. Davidicus Wong, Laughter Zone 101 comedians, laughter yoga, inspirational quotes, refreshments and door prizes. Tickets are $5 and available at Century House, 620 Eighth St. For more information, call 604-519-1066.

3Drop by the grand opening of the shops at New West Station (at Plaza 88) and enjoy entertainment and enter to win some free giveaways. Safeway is sponsoring a free charity barbecue from 12: 30 to 1: 30, but the grand opening runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Plaza 88 is located at the New Westminster SkyTrain station, which is at the corner of Eighth and Columbia streets.

4Check out the roses that are blooming at the Arts Council of New Westminster's gallery.

New Westminster artist Marney-Rose Edge will be at the gallery for artist talks and demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.

Visitors can discuss the paintings with her, or watch her paint this iconic flower.

The show, Celebration, continues until Saturday, Nov. 24. The arts council gallery is located in Centennial Lodge in Queen's Park.

5Make some noise for arthritis and take part in the Jingle Bell Walk and Run for Arthritis. The non-competitive, family-oriented fundraiser has raised thousands of dollars to support people in B.C. and the Yukon who are living with arthritis.

The Arthritis Society is aiming to break the $100,000 milestone at this year's event, which takes place on Sunday, Nov. 18 in New Westminster.

Registration takes place from 8 to 9: 45 a.m. at the Inn at the Quay (900 Quayside Dr.), the walk/ run starts at 10 a.m. and the post-event party gets underway at 11: 15 a.m. at the Inn at the Quay.

Everyone is invited to attend the Jingle Bell Walk and Run for Arthritis, which features one and five kilometre routes.
