Several artsy events (and a renowned curling tournament) top our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. Here are our suggestions for the Oct. 5 to 7 weekend:

1Drop by the Arts Council of New Westminster gallery in Queen's Park and check out the gallery exhibition of paintings, sculptures and poetry: Animal Beings, by artist Johann Peter Wieghardt. The show takes place until Oct. 27, but an artist reception is being held on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Readings of Wieghardt's poetry will be done by actor David Kykl.

The gallery, located in (o Thing Centennial Lodge in Queen's Park, is open from 1 to 5 p.m., this w but closed on Mondays. For more information, visit www.artscouncil newwest.org or call 604-525-3244.

2Enjoy four different musical performances at a fundraiser for the Royal City Humane Society.

Royal City Rock and Roll features a silent auction and performances by The Beladeans, Big Top, Uke 'n' Drink and DJ Bryce Dunn at an all-ages event on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Columbia Theatre, 530 Columbia St.

Tickets for the benefit concert are $10 at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show gets underway at 7: 30 p.m.

3Check out some of the action at the Westcoast Curling Classic when some of Canada's finest curlers take to the ice at the Royal City Curling Club. The annual event takes place from Oct. 4 to 8 at 75 E. Sixth Ave. In addition to some of the top curlers in Canada, this year's event includes an invitational junior spiel.

4Have a laugh at the Vagabond Players' latest production, Ned Durango Comes to Big Oaks.

Billed as "a comedy for the small town in all of us," the play is showing at the Bernie Legge Theatre in Queen's Park from Oct. 4 to 27. For reservations, call 604-521-0412 or visit www.vagabondplayers.ca.

5 Take in some poetry at the Poetic Justice reading series. It takes place every Sunday (except holiday weekends and the month of December) at the Heritage Grill from 3 to 5 p.m. Poets are encouraged to arrive early and sign up for the open mike; the featured poet starts at 4 p.m.

The Heritage Grill is located at 447 Columbia St.
