Residents of two Royal City residences were evacuated after a gas line ruptured in their neighbourhood.

Residents of two Royal City residences were evacuated after a gas line ruptured in their neighbourhood.

New Westminster Fire and Rescue Service evacuated residents from their homes on Tuesday afternoon, after a break occurred in a two-inch gas line off of Richmond Street, near the Burnaby border.

"There is construction in the area, from what I understand," said Fortis B.C. spokesperson Lisa Corcoran about the cause of the broken gas line.

According to Corcoran, the homes on either side of the site were evacuated. She said 23 customers' services were disrupted while repairs were made to the gas line on Tuesday afternoon.

Corcoran said the incident is a reminder for people to use B.C. One Call to get mapping information to avoid these types of situations.

Fire inspector Brent Joel said the incident occurred in a laneway off of Lee Street about 12: 25 p.m. on March 20.

Witnesses told The Record that there was a strong smell in the neighbourhood.
