Fun Day returns to New West park

New West teen aims to create fun summer for local kids

New West boy Nur Elmasri has organized Fun Day in New Westminster for the past three years. Nur, shown at the 2014 event, is excited to offer this year's event on Thursday, Aug. 20.

A New West teen is looking to add a little bit of fun to summer vacation for local students.

For the third year in a row, Nur Elsmari has received a grant to host Fun Day in Moody Park. This year’s event, which is expected to be bigger and better than past years, is set for Thursday, Aug. 20 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Moody Park water park and playground.

“The participation is amazing,” said Nur, who turns 14 in September. “We had more than 700 people last year. It was really good.”

Nur has amassed a number of donations of food and beverages from local businesses. Some prizes will be awarded to people who enter a draw.

“I have face painting, henna. The police are bringing a car so kids can sit inside it,” he said. “I have the Tumble Bus coming. It’s like a gymnasium inside a bus. It’s a normal school bus with a tiny swing, a trampoline. There’s a zip line. It’s obviously meant for younger kids. I tried to go on it and I can’t do the zip line. The zip line leads to a pool of balls and you jump in them. Pretty cool.”

Along with give-aways for the draws, local businesses have also contributed food and beverages for Fun Day participants. A band will also be performing.

“I believe there are still kids who need fun. I am trying to work my hardest to get more fun,” Elmasri said. “There are kids in my complex that can’t go anywhere. All they can do is play outside.”

Everyone is invited to attend Fun Day, which Nur puts on with the support of a New Westminster neighbourhood small grant from the Vancouver Foundation.
