The group that is building a replacement for the Pattullo Bridge from New Westminster to Surrey is warning about looming lane closures and noise as some area residents say they are already fed up with it.
Fraser Crossing Partners is continuing site preparation work in New Westminster, which includes investigative ground work and utility relocations within the project area.
“Nearby residents will see crews on site and may hear noise associated with the use of excavators, auger drills, and hydrovac equipment,” reads a statement.
No kidding, say some area residents.
“I know that it’s important to see the bridge built, but people need to remember that those of us who live near the bridge have to put up with a lot,” said Phil Adams. “I work from home and I’m dreading when it gets warmer and I won’t be able to open my windows because of all of the noise. It’s frustrating.”
Adams is just one of several New West residents who have contacted the Record in recent weeks with complaints about disruptions from bridge construction, as well as from Metro Vancouver's recent construction on the sewer system along Columbia Street.
Drivers and pedestrians and cyclists can also expect plenty of disruptions throughout 2022.
“While site preparation work is underway, temporary lane closures and impacts to sidewalks and multi-use paths can be expected,” reads a statement. “Signage will be in place and traffic control personnel will be on site to assist when required.”
Fenced work areas have already been set up in several locations and additional fencing can be expected. These areas will be used for storing materials and parking for site trailers, construction vehicles and crews.
Some tree removal will take place south of Columbia Street, said Fraser Crossing Partners.
Trees removed as part of the project will be replaced at a minimum ratio of 2:1.
“The project team will work closely with municipalities and First Nations on the replacement of trees and the enhancement of sites within the project area over the duration of the project,” says a statement.
Hours of work are Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
