Freezing rain is in the forecast for Vancouver.

Environment Canada has issued a weather warning for Vancouver as freezing rain is expected over the next 24 hours.

In the warning, the federal agency says the precipitation that's already started will continue as freezing rain until Wednesday morning when it becomes rain again.

"Light freezing rain is expected this afternoon and tonight as rain or drizzle falls across Metro Vancouver while surface temperatures remain cold," states Environment Canada online.

Where the freezing rain lands will be affected by elevation.

"Areas along the water will be less susceptible to impacts as surface temperatures may remain slightly above freezing," notes the federal agency. "However inland locations and higher elevations may see a higher impact as surface temperatures remain below freezing, leaving a higher possibility of ice buildup on roads."

They warn drivers to be aware of the slippery conditions and drive accordingly.

"Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Slow down driving in slippery conditions. Watch for taillights ahead and maintain a safe following distance. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas," they caution.

Pacific air will push the Arctic air currently cooling Vancouver out Wednesday morning and surface temperatures will warm as that happens.

While it is expected to warm up a bit on Wednesday, that cool air will return later in the week and there's a "nearly 100 per chance" of snow on Christmas Day.
