Get moving

More than 400 Royal City residents are trying to get more active in 2012.

The City of New Westminster launched its Biggest Mover challenge on Feb. 5. The program offers incentives and weekly challenges to help residents improve their health.

Sandy Earle, the city's active communities programmer, said people can still sign up until Feb. 17, but they'll just have to work a little harder to collect points by the end of the challenge on April 28.

"I'm getting emails like crazy that people are counting up their points," she said. "One person, emailed me to say he was choosing to walk to his meeting downtown instead of driving."

As of Feb. 10, 450 people had registered with the city program.

Valentine flowers

A company that provides home-care services brought Operation Pink Carnation to New Westminster.

Nurse Next Door handed out pink carnations to the first 200 people to drop by and visit them at Royal City Centre on Valentine's Day. They were at the mall providing information about their home-care services and handing out pink carnations to seniors.
