Remember when you were a kid and you used to imagine what the future would be like? Maybe there'd be flying cars, a robot to clean your house, manned space missions to the other side of the galaxy?

If you grew up in New West, perhaps you simply fantasized about a new high school being built in time for your children to attend it.

The current high school is outdated, deteriorating and - according to reports last month - may be home to a growing family of rats.

What was once a jewel for the city is now a liability: with newer schools over the border in Burnaby, Coquitlam and south of the Fraser, it's not inconceivable that the district could be losing students - and losing students means losing funding.

Since there's so much talk about the "new" New Westminster, now might be a good time to actually get this project happening. There are families who started their kids in kindergarten years ago thinking they'd be sending them to a new high school when the time came - but that seems more unlikely as the years continue to pass.

We realize there have been some unique hurdles in this case, but it's long past the time for excuses - perhaps it's time to resurrect the old argument in favour of amalgamating with nearby (and generally very well run) districts in the region?
