New Westminster police were busy Saturday night attending to two separate property crime calls resulting in the arrests of five young offenders.

The first call came in around 7:40 p.m. Saturday night from Richard McBride Elementary School at 331 Richmond St. When the police officers arrived on the scene, they arrested three youths leaving the school. A fourth was arrested further down the street. Police believe he was acting as a lookout, according to a media release.

After closer investigation, police discovered the youths had managed to break into the school "by prying (open) an outside door." The youths ranged in ages from 14 to 17 and were all released to their guardians except one, who remains in custody because of his history with police.

The NWPD received a second call, this time around 3:20 a.m. Sunday morning, notifying officers that a bait car had been activated in the West End of New Westminster. The car was located in the 2000-block of London Street, where officers disabled the vehicle and arrested the driver, according to the release.

While the driver is facing multiple charges, police won't release his identity because he is 17-years-old and protected under the Young Offenders Act.
