First homicide hits Royal City

An investigation is currently underway into New Westminster’s first homicide of 2016. The incident happened early in the morning on Nov. 8 in the 700 block of Fifth Avenue.

An investigation is currently underway into New Westminster’s first homicide of 2016.

The incident happened early in the morning on Nov. 8 in the 700 block of Fifth Avenue. Police were called by paramedics to the scene of an altercation around 3:40 a.m. The victim had sustained serious injuries during the attack and had been rushed to hospital. The victim did not survive his injuries, according to a press release.

Back at the scene, officers arrested a suspect and took him into custody. Investigators with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team were dispatched around 7 a.m. and are now actively investigating the killing alongside New Westminster police, noted the release.

Officers are gathering evidence at this time, and no further information is available, according to Cpl. Meghan Foster, spokesperson for IHIT.

Investigators do not believe this was a random incident.
