First-ever special education parent network day will be held in New West

The New Westminster District Parent Advisory Council and the B.C. Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils have come together to host the first-ever Special Education Parent Network Day in B.C. next month.

The New Westminster District Parent Advisory Council and the B.C. Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils have come together to host the first-ever Special Education Parent Network Day in B.C. next month.

The event was developed to address concerns that parents of students with special needs lack important information and support, according to a council media release.

"From district to district, available support and services vary . parents often act in isolation, reacting to a perceived lack of adequate support and funding rather than proactively advocating for the best possible education for their child," stated the release.

The councils' goal is to make the network day a bi-annual event for all school districts in the province. So far, only two events are planned for 2013, the first in New Westminster and the second in Nanaimo.

The scheduled events will include information sessions on sexuality, advocacy, mental health, community support, and a variety of other topics.

The New Westminster event will take place Saturday, April 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at F.W. Howay School in New Westminster.

Anyone interested in attending the event must pre-register as space is limited. Tickets are $20 and include lunch.
