Firefighters shredding documents for charity

New Westminster firefighters are giving folks a chance to dispose of documents and contribute to local charities at their upcoming shred-a-thon.

New Westminster firefighters are giving folks a chance to dispose of documents and contribute to local charities at their upcoming shred-a-thon.

The New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society is holding its annual shred-a-thon on Saturday, June 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Canada Games Pool parking lot.

Documents will be shredded on site.

"We are partnering up with BCAA to provide professional paper shredding," said firefighter Trevor Douglas. "It's open to the public and businesses."

People are asked to bring their documents in easy-to-carry boxes or containers.

In addition to the shred-a-thon, the event includes a barbecue, popcorn and entertainment.

Douglas noted that the school district is arranging for students to perform live music at Saturday's shred-a-thon.

"We are trying to make it a nice, fun event that the community enjoys," he said.

The New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society raises funds that it then disperses to various groups and services in the community.

These include the Union Gospel Mission, the pediatric unit at Royal Columbian Hospital and food programs at local schools.

The society also contributes to the B.C. Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund.

"We make sure most of the money stays in New Westminster," Dougas said.

Tax receipts will be available to people donating $25 or more at the shred-a-thon.
