A New Westminster man was injured in an apartment fire early Saturday morning.

Fire crews were called to an apartment in the 400 block of Seventh Street about 1: 20 a.m. on March 23, after smoke was detected in the building.

"The tenant of the suite was injured and sent to Royal Columbian Hospital," said fire inspector Kathy Ius. "He was rescued out of the suite."

Ius said early indications were that the tenant of the first floor suite suffered from smoke inhalation, and possibly burns.

"We are still investigating the cause. It did start in a bathroom," she said. "There was a lot of smoke in the suite."

According to Ius, fire damage was contained to one room in the suite. Firefighters used a pressurized water canister to extinguish the fire.

"The investigation is ongoing," Ius said. "From our end, there is a bit of information we are waiting for."

Ius said fire crews were able to quickly assess the situation and mitigate any further damage, before it spread to other suites in the building.

HOW DID IT START?

An investigation is continuing into the cause of a kitchen fire that started when no one was home.

New Westminster firefighters attended a residence in the 1000-block of Queens Avenue on Tuesday, March 19 just after 11: 30 a.m.

No one was injured in the fire.

"It did start on the countertop in the kitchen," said fire inspector Kathy Ius. "The fire cause is undetermined officially."

Investigators are still determining the specific cause of the fire.

"There was a bit of damage to the kitchen mainly," Ius said. "There is damage through the suite."

Ius said the preliminary damage estimate is $20,000. Had the fire occurred at a time of day when fewer people were around to notice the smoke, she said it could have caused more damage.
