Where's there's no smoke, there is sometimes fire.

On the evening of March 17, New Westiminster firefighters were called to an apartment above the ambulance station at 823 12th St.

"Crews rolled up. Nothing was showing," said New Westminster fire inspector Brent Joel. "They went up and entered the suite. One bedroom was fully involved. They put it out."

Joel said the suite's resident had some electric cars that were plugged into battery chargers, which were located in the area where the fire began. The chargers have been sent out for further testing.

"The occupants weren't home. They came home. He used an extinguisher on it and had to get out of there," he said.

According to Joel, the man was treated for smoke inhalation but is fine. The fire is estimated to have caused about $10,000 damage.
