People interested in volunteering for Operation Red Nose on New Year’s Eve have until the end of today (Monday) to get their applications in.

Operation Red Nose offers safe rides home to people who’ve had too much to drink or are too tired to drive. The rides are by donation with all the proceeds going to KidSport.

“We’ve had an excellent turnout of volunteers this year,” Chris Wilson, provincial spokesperson for Operation Red Nose, said in a media release. “But based on the increase in demand for rides so far, we’re going to need a lot more for New Year’s Eve.”

The Tri-Cities Operation Red Nose program services both Burnaby and New Westminster. The final night for rides will be Dec. 31 – New Year’s Eve – and it is one of the busiest nights, according to the release.

Drivers who've had too much to drink or anyone looking for a safe ride home can call 778-866-6673, and three volunteers will come pick them up – two volunteers will drive the person home in his or her own vehicle, while a third volunteer follows in an escort vehicle. Volunteers must be available to work New Year's Eve between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m.

Anyone interested in volunteering on New Year’s Eve must submit their application by the end of day on Dec. 29 (today). Application forms can be downloaded from operationrednosetricities.com. A criminal records check is also required.
