Family fun at library

Check out books on games and cooking with children

Now that autumn is upon us, come and check out all the ways the ibrary can help you have free and nearly free family fun.

We have a Family Movies on DVD list on our We Recommend... page at www. nwpl.ca/your_library/collections/we_ recommend.php, with more than 40 suggestions and a rating system to help you gauge the suitability of the materials for your family.

You can print a copy of the list from home or pick up a printed copy from the inquiry desk the next time you're in.

Kids in the kitchen can be messy but the fun can outweigh the flour that's sure to spread all over when you're cooking together.

At the Farmer's Market with Kids, by Leslie Jonath, encourages children to pick vegetables at the market, and then provides seasonally arranged recipes to turn the found vegetables into delicious family diners.

There are also tips for safe and enjoy-able cooking with children. The subject heading Cookbooks for Children will net you all the titles the library has on kid-friendly cooking, like the Do It Myself Cookbook: Nothing Sharp, Nothing Hot! by Laurie Wolf, or A Superhero Cookbook, by Sarah Schuette.

Perhaps you'd like your family to play more games together?

Jim Glenn's Treasury of Family Games might be just the ticket, with more than 200 family oriented games.

There are board games, indoor games, outdoor games, card games, and more.

Your family might prefer The Family Book: Amazing Things to Do Together where you can learn to create secret codes and go sledding when you don't have a sled.

If your wee ones like crafts, Best of Children's Arts & Crafts has more than 200 activities including painting, collage and kite making.

Step-by-step instructions are included, too. The Everything Toddler Activity Book has plenty of activities (400+) to help entertain your busy toddler.

You can find all these items at the New Westminster Public Library. You provide the family - we'll take care of the fun!

The library is located at 716 Sixth Ave. in New Westminster.
