The 50-bed extreme weather response shelter is opening tonight in New Westminster.

New Westminster’s extreme weather response shelter is opening its doors tonight to provide a warm, dry place for folks with no homes to rest their heads.

An extreme weather alert for New Westminster has been issued because of weather conditions. The alert stated the forecast is calling for accumulating rain and a steady decline in temperatures, dropping to zero degrees by end of week.

The Lower Mainland Purpose Society’s extreme weather response shelter will open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. at 502 Columbia St. Located in the old Army and Navy department store’s building, the shelter is accessed from the Front Street side of building.

The shelter, which has space for up to 50 adults aged 19 and older, opened on Dec. 30.

It opens on nights when weather conditions are deemed to create significant risk to people who have no homes. People are provided with a cot and bedding, as well as meals.
