Eating disorders and disordered eating: Get the facts at this New West info night

Are you worried about your teen's eating habits? New Westminster parents and caregivers are being given a chance to learn more about eating disorders and disordered eating in youth.

The New Westminster school district is hosting another evening in its Wellness Centre speaker series.

This one's set for Thursday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Fraser River Middle School.

An event notice says topics covered in the evening will include:

  • eating disorders vs. disordered eating;
  • the eating continuum and disordered behaviours;
  • contributing factors;
  • dieting vs. healthy eating;
  • "health at every size" explained;
  • protective/risk factors;
  • addressing someone who you are worried about; and
  • resources.

The presenter is Carmen Kaufmann with Jessie's Legacy, a social work graduate, certified personal trainer and sports nutritionist. She has been a disordered eating specialist for more than 25 years and runs Weigh of Life Wellness, a private practice in North Vancouver.

The presentation will take place in the multi-purpose room at FRMS, 800 Queens Ave. Use the entrance by the gym doors, near the staff parking lot.

It's free, but those interested in attending should register ahead via Eventbrite. Space is limited, so be sure to sign up in advance.
